Following the launch of their debut toy collection, OG NFT project Pudgy Penguins’ ‘Pudgy Toys’ has seen instant success. Within the two day period so far, they have seen $500,000 in sales, and over 20,000 Amazon sales.

Quick Takes

  • Pudgy Penguins released ‘Pudgy Toys’ a few days ago
  • Since launch, they have garnered over $500,000 in sales.
  • This move is only the latest from Luca Metz and his team in a surge since his takeover just last year.

Behind the Sales of ‘Pudgy Toys’

‘Pudgy Toys’ is only the latest innovation in Pudgy Penguins’ NFT empire as they take to the physical world with a historic toy collection. This move brings them closer to the mainstream market, and moves them further towards a more traditional audience and beyond the smaller community of web3.

The OG NFT project first announced the project on Thursday, via an excitable Twitter video post. It came as a part of physical toys and a part of a new online platform. The video showcased a young girl’s vast collection of penguin NFT-inspired toys, in a Toy Story-like environment, where the characters came to life upon their owner leaving. The video finalised with the announcement that the toys would be available on Amazon.

Upon launch, they highlighted the history of the launch: “This will be the first time that NFTs and blockchain technology are introduced to the everyday consumer in a seamless, non-intimidating way.”

Since launch, the project have sold $500,000 worth of stock to Amazon, one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, totalling 20,000 sales overall.

In recent times, the penguin-based NFTs have been focusing outside of NFTs, including attempting to grow their brand via memes and funny posts on Instagram and other social media platforms.

The success and sales numbers were a long time coming, according to an interesting Twitter thread from Pudgy fan, Moe Zaharia, who praised Luca Netz, the project’s CEO, for the forward-thinking moves in turning the NFTs to a worldwide brand, rather than “just an NFT collection”.

The History of Pudgy Penguins

The Pudgy Penguins NFT collection was launched on July 23, 2021, by a group of college students. The initial collection consists of 8,888 unique penguins, each with its own randomly generated traits. The penguins were an instant hit, selling out in minutes.

The Pudgy Penguins quickly became one of the most popular NFT collections on the market. At the time, they featured in huge publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Celebrities like Steph Curry and Tory Lanez also became collectors of the cute NFTs.

In January 2022, the Pudgy Penguins community voted to get rid of the original creators of the project. The community was unhappy with the lack of progress on the project’s roadmap. At the time, that included plans for a children’s book, a metaverse game, and a token launch.

The project was acquired by Luca Netz in April 2022. Netz has since made significant progress on the project’s roadmap. The Pudgy Penguins have of course seen success this week in their debut physical toy launch, and a metaverse game is currently in development.

The Pudgy Penguins have experienced a resurgence in popularity since Netz took over the project. The floor price of the NFTs has increased significantly, and the community is more engaged than ever before.
