Vatican Library and NTT DATA, a global technology services provider, have teamed up to digitize the library’s extensive collection of cultural assets using their advanced “AMLAD” digital archiving solution. The collab aims to preserve valuable pieces of human history while making them available worldwide. Since 2014, NTT DATA’s “AMLAD” has been collaborating with the Vatican Library to create a digital archive of its vast collection of cultural treasures.

Quick Takes:

  • NTT DATA and Vatican Library team up to digitize the library’s extensive collection of cultural assets using the AMLAD digital archiving solution.
  • The AMLAD solution not only safeguards cultural treasures but also enables researchers worldwide to access the library’s holdings.
  • The Vatican Library Web3 Support Project uses blockchain technology to connect the library with supporters.
NTTDATA launched a Proof of Concept to test the use of NFT for the digital contents of the Vatican Library.

The Vatican Library Web3 Support Project

In February, the Vatican Library and NTT DATA launched the “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project.” Not to mention, the project is the first initiative of their “Web3 Community Platform.” The Web3 project uses blockchain technology to connect the library with supporters. Further, it rewards supporters with NFTs for sharing the initiative on social media or showing their support for the library.

By owning these NFTs, supporters gain access to high-resolution images of 15 cultural heritage items owned by the Library. Additionally, along with images they get explanatory texts created specifically for the project.

This collection includes approximately:

  • 1.6 million printed books,
  • 80,000 manuscripts,
  • 300,000 coins and medals, and
  • 150,000 prints and drawings,

AMLAD Solution

Essentially, AMLAD is a game-changer for libraries and museums, allowing them to protect precious cultural assets that are vulnerable to decay and damage. Basically, the solution is designed not just for preservation but also for promoting usage. It adheres to international data structures and library classifications. This ensures compliance with both global standards and the Vatican Library’s specific rules.

“There are a large number of valuable cultural assets stored in cultural institutions around the world. However, you can only see them by going there, and even if you go there, it is very difficult to find what you are looking for. However, if digital data is properly archived, it is possible to easily and freely find and view what you want, no matter where in the world you are”.

Asahi Hasebe, head of the AMLAD project at NTT DATA

A Heavenly Match

Overall, the partnership between NTT DATA and the Vatican Library is truly a “heavenly” match in the world of digital archiving.

The AMLAD solution is a game-changer in the world of digital archiving. Designed not just for preservation, but also for promoting usage, AMLAD focuses on simplifying search systems and enabling the quick location of data and documents. This advanced solution grants researchers from around the globe access to the Vatican Library’s digitized content, regardless of their location.

Moreover, AMLAD adheres to international data structures and library classifications, ensuring compliance with both global standards and the Vatican Library’s specific rules. With AMLAD at the helm, the future of digital archives promises to be more accessible and user-friendly than ever before.

Lastly, the potential of Web3 to create connections based on individual intentions and trust signifies a new era in digital archiving. With this collaboration, it’s safe to say that the future of digital archiving is in good hands.
