FC Barcelona kick-starts a new Web3 initiative as a subsequent piece of its ‘Masterpiece‘ collection. This time around, the renowned sports team is taking strides with the OG NFT project World of Women (WoW), to empower women’s football presence through ‘Empowerment’ collectibles starting June 26.
Quick Takes:
- FC Barcelona teams up with WoW to launch ‘Empowerment’ NFTs, celebrating and elevating women’s football.
- The Empowerment assets, crafted by artist Rhi Madeline, showcase the women’s club captain Alexia Putellas leading FC Barcelona to victory.
- Granting meet-and-great opportunities and exclusive memorabilia, these FC Barcelona NFTs will launch on OpenSea starting June 26.
Championing Women’s Football On-Chain
FC Barcelona and WoW’s Web3 initiative showcases the football team’s continued exploration of blockchain technology alongside a dedication to women’s resilience and strength in sports.
Paying homage to the Spanish football club’s iconic players through digital art, Rhi Madeline crafts the artwork symbolizing “transformation and a catalyst for progress”. As such, the digital assets illustrate the victorious scene of the women’s club captain Alexia Putellas leading the football team to victory, scoring two goals during the Women’s Champions League semi-final match against Wolfsburg in 2022.
Auctioning on OpenSea from June 26 – 28, the NFTs minted on Ethereum’s scaling network Polygon grant access to meeting the football legend herself, alongside owning a seat from Barcelona’s stadium, a pair of autographed boots, and more.
FC Barcelona’s Web3 Strides
FC Barcelona’s leading NFT initiative for Masterpiece was first dedicated to Johan Cruyff. The legendary football player had an impressive run with the team during the mid 19-70s, winning two Ballon d’Or awards during his duration with the club. In light of the renowned sports player’s success, Cruyff returned to manage the club in 1988, boosting FC Barcelona to be its most successful in history during this time frame, collecting 11 trophies, including four consecutive La Liga titles.
Cruyff’s significant achievements resulted in the NFTs selling for $693,000 during a Sotheby’s auction in July 2022. Also propelling the collectible’s price tag was a meet-and-greet and the chance to play at Spotify Camp Nou.
What’s more, FC Barcelona recently joined forces with Plastiks to launch an NFT campaign to promote a much-needed focus on sustainability, donating proceeds toward helping the plastic waste crisis.
However, through Empowerment NFTs, the iconic football club continues illustrating an innovative approach toward engaging fans and celebrating its history through blockchain technology. More importantly, advocating for female athletes and their recognition.
