NFT Lately reaches out to the CPO of Civic, JP Bedoya, to learn about the importance of self-sovereign identities
Can you tell me about yourself?
Firstly, at heart, I am a tech geek who’s a proud husband and father of three. I love building products that help solve meaningful problems, from digital agriculture to mobile communication, and now to digital identity.
I am fortunate to learn from great leaders and launch products that have reached millions of people worldwide.
Please briefly explain Civic and what the company means to you:
Civic is a leading provider of identity management tools for Web3, empowering people to quickly and privately manage their identities across chains with an on-chain representation of their reusable identity.
One of our main goals is to solve one of the fundamental issues for Web3 users—efficiently managing their self-sovereign identities. We have a chance to correct the antiquated data economy that drives Web2 and help people engage with the platforms of their choice, privately and securely.
Additionally, Civic builds using Web3 principles and privacy at its core. Focusing on every aspect of identity, we believe we must interconnect across chains and applications—paying special attention to how identity verification affects the NFT ecosystem. Identity is the key to ensuring more fair mints and drops from bots and preserving the integrity of communities.
What are the most critical factors of project growth to date?
Opting to focus on supporting the Solana ecosystem was a good move for us in March 2021. The low gas fees and transaction speeds put the chain in a good place to support the development and draw in many users. Civic was on the ground floor, and we admire the strong community and growth mindset.
“Projects realized that having a robust and self-sovereign identity foundation that is private by default is key to building trust and creating secure community experiences,”
says JP Bedoya, Chief Product Officer at Civic.
What have been the most significant challenges for Civic?
Developing identity solutions for an industry that initially functioned with an anonymity-first approach made it difficult to find early adopters. However, as more use cases emerged, projects realized that having a robust and self-sovereign identity foundation that is private by default is key to building trust and creating secure community experiences.
What are the proudest moments of the product to date?
There have been quite a few! One of the first proudest moments includes the success of our token sale, and our approach to delivering open-source protocols for the industry to adopt and build new experiences and solutions.
Being the first on Solana to deliver non-transferable tokens for identity and provide on-chain KYC was a significant achievement for our team. And, of course, seeing developers implement our solutions and watching some impressive statistics grow by the day (300+ Mints protected/114K+ Sales to qualified buyers/1.2M+ Bot attempts thwarted) thanks to our products.
Finally, the recent launch of Civic.me—the first on-chain public Web3 profile and NFT gallery.
