eBay showcases hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to score new business
eBay partners with OneOf to enter the NFT business and “reinterpret iconic Sports Illustrated covers in the era of Web3.”
The first drop of limited-edition NFTs is set to release today, showcasing the Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky making a signature move on ice through animation.
The rarity of the NFTs play a part in the collection’s price. For example, the green tier collection consists of 299 NFTs for $10, whereas the diamond-tier has 15 collectibles up for grabs, estimated to increase in price.
EBAY’S SPORTS MEMORABILIA HISTORY
eBay has been a hub for sports memorabilia collectors for years. Thus, it is no surprise that eBay chose sports stars to represent its NFTs.
Since the early 90s, the e-commerce giant has brought millions of users into the world of auctions. Now, it hopes its NFT collections are as popular as online auctions and bring sales into the mainstream.
ENERGY EFFICIENT BLOCKCHAIN TECH
On the plus, OneOf is an eco-conscious NFT platform which uses energy-efficient blockchain technology.
Cryptocurrency mining can use severe energy, putting people off from trading on-chain altogether. However, OneOf implements a “proof of stake” blockchain network, operating around 2 million times less energy than most “proof of stake” networks.
Additionally, 80% of the collections featured on OneOf’s platforms come from women-led projects and minority creators.
eBay plans to drop other collections featuring more athletes throughout the year.
