Spotify Launches Token-Gated Playlist Pilot for Web3 Experiment

Spotify is tuning into Web3 by introducing a token-gated playlist pilot. The music service’s new feature — currently undergoing testing — enables community members from select non-fungible token (NFT) projects to connect their crypto wallets and gain access to exclusive playlists on the popular streaming platform via their digital assets.

Quick Take:

  • Spotify is using NFT projects Overlord and Kingship, among others, to test its new Web3 token-gated playlist pilot.
  • The pilot allows collectors of the chosen NFT projects to connect their crypto wallets. Then, access exclusive playlists from their digital assets on Spotify.
  • This new initiative allows the digital music streaming service to connect with fans in a new, innovative way.
  • Currently, the service is only available on Android devices and in select countries: the United Kingdom, the United States, Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia.

How Spotify Strikes a Chord with New Music Pilot Program

Spotify is exploring new ways to expand its reach into Web3. As a result, its new Web3 token-gated playlist pilot allows NFT projects to test out this new crypto integration.

Two of the largest NFT project’s picked for trialing out this new feature are Overlord and Kingship.

Overlord describes itself as a “gaming and entertainment brand” rather than an NFT project. Already, it has secured an animation agreement with Seth Green to implement Creepz NFTs. Consequently, Creepz holders can access the platform and enjoy 100 tracks. Some of those songs include “Vitamin C” by CAN, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” by Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and “Rocket Man” by Elton John.

Overlord shared the good news about this new partnership on Twitter:

On the other side, Kingship is a virtual band associated with Universal Music Group’s label. The band is similar to the Gorillaz but comprises imaginary members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs instead. Thus, KINGSHIP Key Card NFT holders can now connect their wallets to Spotify to unlock a curated playlist created by the BAYC supergroup.

Note: This token-gated service is currently only available on Android devices in few countries: the United Kingdom, United States, Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia.

Showing an innovative approach and commitment to exploring new technologies, it’s clear that Spotify is in tune with the changing landscape of the music industry.
